The platy is native from Mexico (Veracruz) to Belize, from slow waters — canals, ditches and springs. Omnivorous. Peaceful, it matures at 3 to 4 months and breeds readily. There are dozens of colour varieties, many crossed with the swordtail. It is used in genetic research.
