Hybrid platy
Xiphophorus maculatus × Xiphophorus variatus
No photo yet
Most platies sold in shops — red-tail, mickey mouse, sunset, long-finned — are hybrids between the common platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) and the variatus platy, often with swordtail blood. They are fertile and interbreed freely, so line colours mix easily. Livebearers, peaceful and hardy; females give birth to formed fry every four to six weeks.
