The variable platyfish is native to the Atlantic slope of northeastern Mexico, from southern Tamaulipas to northern Veracruz, from vegetated canals, ditches and springs. Omnivorous. It is farmed commercially, including hybrids with other species of the genus, and has been introduced to several countries. It is used in genetic research.
