Red zebra
Maylandia estherae
No photo yet
The red zebra is a mbuna from the eastern shore of Lake Malawi, mainly on the Mozambique side. It lives among rocks and eats algae. The female mouthbroods the eggs. It is highly variable: the normal male is light blue and the female brown, but there are orange ('O' morph) and blotched females; orange males, extremely rare in the wild, were fixed by breeders and are now the most common form in the hobby. It is named after Esther Grant, wife of the exporter Stuart Grant. It reaches about 10 to 13 centimetres.
