A large cichlid, up to 30 centimetres, from the Grijalva and Usumacinta basins (Mexico and Guatemala), from calm waters with abundant vegetation and algae. It eats mainly algae, detritus and plants. The male is larger and much more colourful. The pair spawns on flat rocks and guards the eggs and fry together.
