The Otjikoto tilapia is endemic to Namibia, from Lake Guinas, a sinkhole over 100 metres deep; it was introduced to Lake Otjikoto, which gave it its name. It is critically endangered by falling groundwater and introduced species. It eats mainly algae. It occurs in several colour forms in the same lake. The pair spawns on ledges of the rock walls and guards the eggs and young together.
