The eel-tailed catfish is native to the Murray-Darling basin in eastern Australia. It lives in slow streams, lakes and ponds with fringing vegetation, near sand or gravel bottoms, and is commoner in lakes than in flowing water. It feeds on the bottom on insect larvae, prawns, crayfish, molluscs and small fish. It is usually about 50 centimetres, with a maximum of 90.
