The discus lives in the Amazon basin, in slow tributaries, floodplains and flooded forests, sheltering among roots and branches. It schools but becomes territorial when breeding. It eats insect larvae, insects and small invertebrates. It is widely kept in the hobby. The classification of discus species is still debated.
