The redeye piranha, the largest piranha, lives in northern South America. Adults hunt in deep channels and near rapids; juveniles stay in calm, vegetated stretches. An opportunist, it eats fish, bits of fins and scales, insects and carcasses. It lives alone. Its colour varies with the type of water, from pale to almost black. Its teeth can inflict serious bites. It probably comprises several species.
