Asian bonytongue
Scleropages formosus
The Asian arowana lives in Southeast Asia (Mekong, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo), in blackwater rivers, swamps and flooded forests. Juveniles eat surface insects; adults eat fish. The male mouthbroods the eggs and young. It has several colour varieties, such as red and golden, and is highly prized in Chinese culture. It is endangered and has vanished from much of its range; trade fish are farm-bred.
