An anabantid endemic to the Cape, South Africa, from streams and slow waters with cover of rocks, roots and plants. It eats insects, other invertebrates, small fish and crabs. The male is more colourful, courts by blowing bubbles and guards the eggs, which stick to the bottom. It is threatened by introduced fish such as bass.
