The orange chromide lives in coastal lagoons, estuaries and streams of southern India and Sri Lanka, in fresh or brackish water. It eats zooplankton, algae and fish larvae. It lives alongside the green chromide: it eats its eggs and larvae, but also removes its parasites. It reaches 8 centimetres.
