The streaked prochilod comes from southern South America — the Paraná-Paraguay, Paraíba do Sul and Lagoa dos Patos basins. It scrapes the film of algae and detritus from the bottom with its sucker-like mouth. It makes long spawning migrations and supports very important fisheries. It is usually around 45 centimetres but reaches 80.
