The convict blenny is a marine fish from the west-central Pacific (Philippines to the Solomon Islands), from shallow lagoons and coastal reefs. It is neither a blenny nor a goby but belongs to a family of its own. Juveniles, black with a white stripe, mimic the venomous striped eel catfish and swim in tight schools; adults develop pale bars and live hidden in the reef. It reaches 34 centimetres.
