The one-spot livebearer is native to southern and eastern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and northern Argentina, from slow, vegetated waters. Omnivorous, it also eats algae. The female is larger; the male has a gonopodium. It was released in Australia, New Zealand and Africa to fight mosquitoes and became invasive. It tolerates cold water. There are spotted and golden forms.
