A barb endemic to southwestern Sri Lanka, from flowing streams with sand or rock bottoms, where it lives in schools. It eats algae, plankton and detritus. It spawns when the rains arrive; the eggs hatch in about a day. The former red-finned form is now a separate species, Pethia reval.
