The golden pencilfish from the Guianas and the Amazon and Orinoco basins lives in slow rivers and swamps. In groups, males dominate and defend territory. It eats small invertebrates. At night its body pattern changes. Colours vary by region. It scatters its eggs among fine plants. It is one of the most popular and least demanding pencilfish.
