Haitian cichlid

The Haitian cichlid is endemic to the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), from lakes and streams. It lives alone or in pairs, swimming in open water and hiding in rock crevices. It eats algae, aquatic plants and molluscs. When breeding, the female turns almost entirely black and the male shows a black pattern on a silvery ground. It reaches about 21 centimetres.
