A freshwater gudgeon from southeastern Australia, from calm, vegetated rivers and creeks. It eats invertebrates and small fish. It spawns from November to March: the female lays eggs on rocks or logs, and the male guards and fans them until they hatch in 3 to 9 days. It has declined sharply and is the focus of captive-breeding programmes.
