The ram is a dwarf cichlid from the llanos of the Orinoco basin in Venezuela and Colombia, from warm, acidic, vegetated waters. It forms pairs that spawn on flat stones and tend the eggs and fry together. The female usually has a pink belly, and the male is larger. It is mass-produced in many varieties — gold, electric blue, balloon, long-finned — often less fertile and less attentive parents than wild fish. The name honours Manuel Ramirez, one of its first importers.
