A marine fish from the Pacific, with a northern population (Japan and Taiwan to Hawaii) and a southern one (Australia and New Caledonia). Yellow with oblique black stripes. It schools on coastal and lagoon reefs, hiding under ledges and in caves by day. It eats small crustaceans and algae. It reaches about 16 centimetres.
