A dwarf rainbowfish from northeastern Australia and Papua New Guinea, from swamps and streams of clear, acidic water with logs and vegetation. Omnivorous. The male is more colourful. It breeds readily, scattering its eggs among plants. There are geographic variants. Its name honours the ichthyologist Allan McCulloch.
