A mbuna endemic to Lake Malawi, from rocky shores in the south and west of the lake. Juveniles and females are golden yellow with black stripes; the adult male turns dark with light stripes. Older females may darken and look like males. It grazes algae from rocks. One of the most aggressive mbuna, especially towards its own kind. The female mouthbroods the eggs.
