A predatory relative of the gouramis from the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, living in peat swamps, flooded forests and densely vegetated streams. It hunts by ambush with a highly protrusible mouth. The male mouthbroods the eggs. It is hard to keep: it needs very soft, acidic water and rarely accepts dead food. It reaches 20 centimetres.
