The pumpkinseed is native to eastern North America, from heavily vegetated lakes, ponds and backwaters. Very colourful, it has a red spot at the tip of its 'ear flap' (operculum). It eats insects, small fish and other animals. It is territorial. It was taken to Europe around 1880, where it is considered invasive. It is usually 10 to 15 centimetres.
