The hogfish is from the western Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. It lives on reefs rich in gorgonians and eats molluscs, crabs and sea urchins. Its first three dorsal spines are elongated, and it is the only member of its genus. A food fish. Vulnerable.
