The giant trahira is the largest of the trahiras, up to 1.2 metres and 40 kilograms. It lives in the rivers of northern South America, in the backwaters of main rivers and creeks. An ambush predator, it eats mainly fish and is most active at dusk and at night. It spawns at the start of the rainy season. Highly prized as food.
