The true parrot cichlid is the only member of its genus, from the blackwater Rio Negro and upper Orinoco (Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela). Large and metallic green, adults have a reddish throat reminiscent of a parrot's colours. It eats insects, crustaceans and fish. Territorial and quarrelsome with its own kind when space is short. It reaches 35 to 40 centimetres.
