The pearlspot is a cichlid from India and Sri Lanka that lives mainly in brackish water — estuaries, coastal lagoons and lower river reaches — but also occurs in fresh water. It eats mostly algae and plants, with some animal food. It can exceed 30 centimetres. The parents care for the young. It has been introduced to Singapore and Malaysia.
