The threespot barb is widespread, from the Congo basin to the Tanzanian coast and KwaZulu-Natal. It prefers shallow, vegetated water near river inflows and swamps. It eats insects and small animals. In the rainy summer, adults run upstream in shoals to spawn; a female can lay up to 8,000 eggs. It is used as bait for tigerfish. It reaches 15 centimetres.
