The African banded barb lives in southern Africa — Cunene, Okavango, upper and middle Zambezi, Kafue, upper Congo and Lake Kariba — in well-oxygenated, densely vegetated waters. Shy, it is most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon. It eats small invertebrates and plants. Peaceful and schooling. It reaches about 6 centimetres.
