The old wife is a marine fish from the temperate coast of southern Australia, the only member of its family. Juveniles live in estuaries; adults on rocky reefs and seagrass beds, in schools, pairs or alone. It is silver with black vertical stripes and has two dorsal fins with strong spines that can inflict painful stings. It reaches 50 centimetres.
