The Everglades pygmy sunfish comes from the southeastern United States, from North Carolina to Alabama and Florida, from heavily vegetated swamps and slow streams over mud. It eats worms and small crustaceans. It lays its eggs on plants. The breeding male turns black with shining blue spots. It reaches 3.4 centimetres but is usually 2 to 3.
