The emerald catfish, with a metallic green sheen, lives across much of the Amazon basin (Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia), in slow, shallow, muddy waters with dense vegetation. It eats insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans. The female is larger and sticks the eggs to plants near the surface. It is now in the genus Brochis.
