A puffer from estuaries and mangroves of the northern South American coast, from the Gulf of Paria to the Amazon mouth, moving between fresh and brackish water. It reaches almost 30 centimetres, eats mainly molluscs and crustaceans and inflates when threatened. It lives alone or in small groups and may attack others of its kind. It is rare in the aquarium trade.
