A cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, from rocky and rubble areas, where it picks small invertebrates from the rock cover. It is not shy. Adults have dark bars only on the head; juveniles are striped. It spawns hidden among the stones. It reaches about 12 centimetres.
