The marbled hatchetfish from the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the Guianas lives in groups near the surface of blackwater and eats crustaceans and insects. Females have a larger belly. The eggs fall to the bottom or onto vegetation and hatch in about 36 hours at 25 °C. Almost all fish in the trade are wild-caught in the Rio Negro.
