A predatory cichlid from Colombia and Venezuela, from the Atrato, Cauca, Magdalena and Lake Maracaibo basins; it has been introduced to the Orinoco basin. It prefers swamps and marshes with plenty of plants. It eats fish and bottom invertebrates with its large mouth. It reaches about 26 to 30 centimetres.
