A wrasse from the eastern Pacific, from Monterey Bay to the Gulf of California, from rocky reefs and kelp forests. It eats sea urchins, molluscs and crustaceans. All are born female and later turn male. It lives more than 50 years and reaches 91 centimetres. Vulnerable.
