Tricolor sharkminnow
Balantiocheilos melanopterus
The bala shark is a cyprinid from Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula — records from Indochina were of another species. Silvery with black-edged fins, it reaches 35 centimetres and lives in schools in midwater of rivers and lakes. It jumps well: it needs a lid. It is threatened and has vanished from several rivers; fish in the trade are captive-bred.
