A cichlid from Lake Malawi and nearby rivers and lakes of southeastern Africa, to the coast of Mozambique. It prefers shallow water with sand and plants. Omnivorous. The male has blue lips and a dark eye stripe; the female mouthbroods the eggs. It reaches 15 centimetres.
