A cichlid from Lake Tanganyika and surrounding waters, from shallow river stretches, river mouths and lake margins. Widely used in behaviour research: males switch between dominant, colourful territory holders and subordinate, drab ones. The female mouthbroods the eggs. It reaches about 12 to 15 centimetres.
