A predatory cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, from areas where rock meets sand. To hunt it turns on its side and pushes its jaws into rock crevices, catching the small fish hiding there. Males and females live alone; the female enters the male's territory to spawn and mouthbroods the eggs. It reaches 30 centimetres.
