The banded lampeye is the only member of its genus, from the west coast of Africa, from Senegal to Angola. It lives mainly in brackish water — river mouths, lagoons and mangroves — and rarely in fully fresh or salt water. It scatters its eggs among plants. It reaches about 7 to 8 centimetres.
