The saddle cichlid is one of the most widespread acaras of northern South America, from slow or still waters with roots and leaf litter. Very territorial, especially when breeding. Pairs spawn on stone or wood and care for the fry. Males grow larger, develop longer fins and become more colourful when spawning.
